Red Diamonds

About Mondial Neuman Blue Diamonds – Rare and beautiful jewellery, Sydney, Australia
Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and valuable. Most specialists are divided on whether Violet or Red is the rarest and whilst there is no clear answer, Red is indeed a most desirable colour. Due to their extreme rarity, very few jewellers anywhere in the world have seen Natural Red diamonds, however Mondial Neuman are specialists in all natural coloured diamonds and have sold several Red diamonds to clients in Australia and Overseas.

How Rare?
In Australia, a growing number of diamond enthusiasts have viewed a pink diamond, however very few anywhere have ever witnessed a red diamond. Mondial Neuman recently designed a unique blue and fancy purplish red diamond ring for a customer and the combination of these two exquisite rare diamonds makes this special piece a lifetime investment. Significantly both of these rare diamonds came from the Argyle mine in Western Australia.

As the Argyle Diamond mine’s underground operation draws towards a close over the next ten years, the reduction in output should increasingly make coloured diamonds not just a fantastic showpiece but a great investment.

How Valuable?
Fancy red diamonds are naturally more valuable than the more familiar white or near-colourless ones. However given the rarity of these diamonds, the value may continue to increase more than other coloured diamonds. Only a handful has ever received the grade of ‘Fancy Red’, meaning that they are pure red with no modifying colour. There are however other variations of Red Diamonds – Brownish Red, Pinkish Red, Purplish Red diamonds. Given the value of the red diamond, there have been many attempts to reproduce it through treatment. Usually however, treated red diamonds have purplish or brownish colour tones that are different from the purer hues of natural red diamonds. A concern for the trade and consumers alike are the newer, synthetically grown (manmade in a laboratory) variety which are all but indistinguishable from the real thing. All red diamonds should come with a certificate from a reputable, independent laboratory such as the G.I.A., I.G.I or Gubelin, to name a few.

Famous Red Diamonds
1.The most famous red diamond (the Hancock Red) was found in Brazil, and was cut into a round brilliant weighing a modest 0.95-carats and named after its owner, Warren Hancock. The Hancock Red sold at Christie’s auction house for a handsome US$880,000 in 1987.

2. The 0.59-carat pear shaped diamond known as the Rob Red after its owner, Mr. Robert Bogel, is another extremely rare and unique collector’s item. It was presumably found in one of the alluvial (i.e. ancient river) deposits located within the remote interior of Brazil.

3.The Moussaieff Red Diamond is a diamond weighing 5.11 carats (1.022 g) with a triangular brilliant cut (sometimes called a trillion or a trilliant cut), rated in color as Fancy Red by the Gemological Institute of America. While this may seem relatively small when compared to other famous diamonds, the Moussaieff Red is, in fact, the largest Fancy Red the GIA reports having graded.

The Moussaieff Red is reported to have been found by a Brazilian farmer in the Abaetezinho River in 1990, in a region known as Alto Paranaiba which has a reputation as a source of large and fancy-coloured diamonds. In the rough, it is believed to have weighed 13.9 carats (2.78 g).

The diamond was purchased and cut by the William Goldberg Diamond Corp., where it went by its original name the Red Shield. It is currently owned by Moussaieff Jewellers Ltd. The Moussaieff Red was displayed as part of the Smithsonian’s “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit, alongside The De Beers Millennium Star and The Heart of Eternity.

4. The De Young Red is a 5.03-carat, brilliant cut red diamond. The stone is not pure red but has a slight brown hue; Brownish-red diamonds are notably more common than ruby-like pure reds. This brownish overtone makes it appear like a fine red garnet and indeed, it was once purchased as such at an estate sale.

It is the third largest red diamond in the world and it is currently exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.

For a collector or investor wishing to acquire the most highly desirable, natural fancy red or purplish red diamonds, the prices rarely start under A$100,000 for anything above 0.20ct.
