About Blue Diamonds

Blue diamonds are extremely rare and make up less than 0.0001 percent of world’s diamonds. It takes over a hundred million years for this unique color to be developed. Minute amounts of the element boron are crystallized to create the natural blue diamond.

Some of the most famous blue diamonds in the world include “Le Coeur de la Mer” – The Heart of the Ocean as depicted in the blockbuster movie “Titanic”. Despite being one of the rarest diamonds, Rose throws her blue heart-shaped diamond necklace into the ocean as a tribute to her first love. Gloria Stewart who played the elderly Rose in “Titanic,” wore a $20 million, 15-carat blue diamond necklace by Harry Winston to the Academy Awards.

The Hope Diamond is a very deep blue and weights 45.52 carats. Originally known as the Tavernier Blue, it was sold in the 17th century to Kind Louis XIV, and then its name changed after being sold to Lord France Hope. With the later sale to American aristocrat Evelyn Walsh McLean, it is now displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

The largest known blue diamond, however, is the 70 carat Idol’s Eye, knows as “rosy blue”. It is believed to be still owned by Mrs. May Stanton, an American aristocrat.

The most recent sale of a flawless vivid blue diamond set in a platinum ring weighing 7.03 carats was sold in May 2009, for a record S$14 million by Sotheby’s Auctioneers. It is yet unnamed by its new owner.
